Level of Service
HAS will operate two Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances, with one staffed 24/7 and a second available for backup. BLS crews are qualified to assess illness and injury, and to initiate life-saving care such as CPR, breathing support, automatic defibrillation, bleeding control, and spinal stabilization. BLS providers can administer medications such as Epinephrine for severe allergic reactions and Narcan to reverse the effects of opioid overdose.
For patients who require basic care (the majority of calls), a BLS ambulance can provide transport, communicate with the receiving facility, and transfer care to the hospital staff on arrival. In situations requiring more advanced intervention (such as cardiac or respiratory emergencies or major trauma), BLS units collaborate with paramedics (Advanced Life Support , or ALS, providers). After ALS assessment, a paramedic may either assume care of the patient during transport, or determine that the patient is suitable for BLS transport.
